Sarkeys Foundation Scholarships: Mabel Bassett Correctional Center

Sarkeys Foundation / TEEM

Partnering with the Sarkeys Foundation, TEEM, and the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, 1577 Productions produced a short documentary showing the transformative power of college education on those facing incarceration. Taking place in Oklahoma’s largest female prison, this film highlights three stories of women whose lives have been transformed by receiving scholarships from the Sarkeys Foundation to attend college courses hosted in their prison.

Research shows that incarcerated women who receive two college classes have a drastically lower recidivism rate. However, most inmates are unable to afford classes. TEEM, an Oklahoma City based nonprofit that serves those facing incarceration partnered with the Sarkeys Foundation to provide dozens of scholarships at Mabel Bassett Correctional Facility in McCloud, OK. Since its inception in 2023, there has been a noticeable difference in the culture of the prison as more and more women find meaning and hope in the mentorship and pursuit of higher education.

Using this sample as a proving ground, it is hoped that America’s prison system can be positively influenced when its incarcerated population are given hope and purpose for their future.
